Hello 50:50 World in Basel: Gender-based violence in the AI and data-driven world

Despite improvements on many fronts of women’s emancipation and gender equality, girls and women are still overwhelmingly affected by techno-facilitated violence compared to their male counterparts. Cyber harassment, impersonation, stalking, have all increased in intensity and scope with the rise of AI technologies. To date, responsibility for protecting women online has tended to fall on women themselves. But we want to ask: what about the responsibility of tech platforms themselves in this global phenomenon? How do leading AI companies address genAI abuse against women and girls?

We are going to talk about that at our March meetup in Basel together with Dr. Marie Poux-Berthe. She is a research assistant involved in the Intimate Tech Terror Project led by Prof. Veronica Barassi at the University of St.Gallen.

This event is for you if…

  • you want to learn about the specificities of tech-facilitated gender-based violence

  • you want to get some everyday life tips to improve your safety online

  • you are just interested in the topic and want to learn more

We will discuss the following questions:

  • What are the specificities of tech-facilitated gender-based violence?

  • What are the main strategies currently deployed by organizations and institutions to fight against tech-facilitated gender-based violence?

  • In your view, what kind of technological initiatives could contribute to fighting tech-facilitated gender-based violence ?

  • What can we do on an individual level to protect ourselves?

Hello 50:50 World in Zurich: Designed to Fit – But for Whom?

Rethinking Inclusive Service Design

Inclusive design is often misunderstood. Many organizations treat accessibility as an afterthought—a box to check rather than a fundamental design principle. But true inclusion isn’t just about compliance—it’s about rethinking how we design services, systems, and experiences from the start.

This event will explore how exclusion happens by default when we design for the majority. We assume we know what people need, but what if our assumptions are the biggest barrier to real inclusion?

Join us for an insightful session with Selina Finsler, Graduate M.A. in Service Design HSLU. Selina’s journey shows how inclusive design is not just about disability—it’s about designing for human diversity.

Hello 50:50 World Bern: Gender-inclusive city planning

What? What we can learn from gender-inclusive city planning

Who?

Urban planning and design shape the environment around us – and that environment, in turn, shapes how we live, work, play, move, and rest. Cities have historically been planned and designed for men and by men. Our urban environments tend to reflect traditional gender roles.

Gender-inclusive city planning seeks to respond to questions such as: how might we design and plan cities that work well for everyone? What would such a city look like, and how would we go about creating it?

We will discuss for example the following questions:

  • What are practical examples of the built environment that reflects traditional gender roles that we can experience when living, working and moving in cities?

  • How would a gender-inclusive city be designed and look like?

  • How does technology empower gender-inclusive city planning?

  • How can we draw parallels to the practices and methods of city planning on how we design and run companies in a "gender-inclusive" way?

Hello 50:50 World Bern: Asset framing

Lightning talk

What? How to transform the narrative of diversity in tech with asset framing

Who? Martina Niggli

Have you heard of asset framing? Martina will be sharing with us an approach to problem solving that evolves around how we frame a topic with a focus on assets or potentials rather than challenges or deficits.

Originally introduced by Trabian Shorters to create equity for the BMe community, we will be applying this approach to questions around diversity in tech and identify where it can help to change and transform the narrative away from stigmas to powerful and positive stories.
